BU Masters Degree Program in Global Manufacturing

Students from the US

Boston University with the University of Technology (RWTH), Aachen, has established an unique graduate engineering degree program in Global Manufacturing that focuses on solving industrial problems in a multicultural environment. This highly selective 2-year research program prepares students to become international engineers and managers who are trained to operate in the global business environment.

The Global Manufacturing Masters Degree curriculum caters to the 21st century engineer by delivering information, systems, and management science skills. The curriculum stresses the importance of information systems complements classical manufacturing engineering instruction in design, automation, engineered materials, and machine tool design, as well as more recent application areas including microelectronics manufacturing, optoelectronics, and microelectromechanical systems (MEMS).

In order to satisfy degree requirements students will select three core courses to build a foundation of three of four areas (manufacturing systems management, software, and materials) and then focus their studies in one of six specialization areas (systems and operations research, product innovation and management, manufacturing operations management, automation and control, materials and processes, or microelectronics fabrication). Finally, three electives and a MS thesis allow students to concentrate on one specialization area or pursue a second one. The MS thesis offers the opportunity to either hone deeper into one's chosen engineering science area, or to possibly engage in an applied case study of a real industrial problem.

Students enrolled in the program will complete the majority of their coursework at Boston University and will perform a research with Boston University's Department of Manufacturing Engineering or the Fraunhofer Center for Manufacturing Innovation.

Furthermore, students will spend up to one year in Aachen, Germany conducting research at Fraunhofer's Institute for Production Technology IPT or at RWTH's Laboratory for Machine Tools and Production Technology. Research Assistantships covering tuition and including a stipend may be available.
